Real Life Story

After their landlord decided to raze their substandard housing in Butte, MT, Amy and Jerry left town with their 12-year-old daughter Amber to find a better life in Bozeman. Besides some clothes and a few favorite books, they brought a lot of unwanted baggage: chronic health problems for Amy, and a history of being bullied for Amber. They had no family to bid them farewell from Butte...let alone welcome them home to Bozeman. Their car died on the trip, a total loss. But their move would prove auspicious.

Family Promise of Gallatin Valley took them in, and their lives began to change. Amber expanded her wardrobe with donated clothing and a trip to Target paid for by her new school, which also had a strong anti-bullying policy. Jerry got a job at the Salvation Army. Family Promise arranged for local agencies to cover medicine for Amy until she found a job with benefits. They opened their first savings account.

When Jerry and Amy found an apartment they could afford, IHN volunteers furnished it within the week. At their farewell party, they promised to keep in touch...and they have.

Jerry wrote a letter to the editor of a local paper asking everyone to contribute to the IHN, pledging $20/month himself. When they came to the holiday party, they even brought a turkey they had been given because they knew another family might need it more-they were doing fine.
